The Department of Sociology at Columbia offers a graduate program focused on preparing students for the degree of doctor of philosophy (PhD), as well as a freestanding one-year Masters (MAO) program. Both programs aim to provide students with tools they need to produce original sociological insights and scholarship. The PhD program is structured to allow and to encourage students to develop their own research projects early on. All PhD students, over the course of their training, are expected to attend conferences (we offer travel support) and to submit articles for publication. We accept students from a broad range of personal and academic backgrounds. We value diversity, and accept many international students. An undergraduate major in sociology is not required.
