Biographical Note:

Debra Minkoff is Professor and Chair of Sociology at Barnard College, Columbia University.  Her work explores the ecological and institutional dynamics of contemporary American social movements and political organizations.  She has published on such topics as the structure of protest cycles in the U.S., organizational change and failure among national political organizations, and  the role of national social movements in American civil society, along with a number of papers on the conceptual and methodological issues facing researchers working at the intersection of organizational and social movement research.  More recently her work has investigated such topics as the impact of foundation funding on consolidating the gains of the feminist and civil rights movements and the structure of the national advocacy sector in the U.S.  A newer project in the works examines the sequencing of same-sex partnership laws in the European Union since 1970.
