Biographical Note

Sylvie Min Yan is an M.A. student in Sociology at Columbia University. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Hong Kong. Before joining Columbia, she worked in legal practice and provided pro bono legal assistance to marginalized communities in Hong Kong and survivors of domestic violence in China. She has also been involved in assessing the implementation of China's Anti-Domestic Violence Law and designing and implementing capacity-building programs for women in rural China.

Sylvie's research interests center on the cultural dimensions of inequality, particularly how expectations associated with social categories become consequential in people's everyday decisions, interactions, and understandings of themselves. Her current research lies at the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality, examining how racialized and gendered expectations figure in online content creators' self-presentation and sense of self.
