Bio

I am a sociologist of gender and sexuality. I study how gender and sexual categories emerge, become institutionalized, and transform. I am particularly interested in how institutional expertise on gender and sexuality is produced and contested. My primary work focuses on the governance of gender and sexual rights in international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and the production of gender expertise in the U.S. medical field. My research has been published in a variety of venues, including the American Journal of Sociology, Annual Review of Sociology, Social Forces, and Gender and Society. I earned my B.A. in Development Studies and Economics from Brown University and my Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.
