Professor David Stark and PhD Student Yanze Yu in China

Professor David Stark and PhD student Yanze Yu have started the summer in proper fashion! The two recently met in China for a series of events, including the 100th Year Celebration of the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University; a celebration for the publication of the English translation of Niklas Luhmann’s magnum opus, The Society of Society; and for some sightseeing at the Great Wall. 

David delivered a number of invited lectures and seminars at these and other events around the country:

• Peking University,  Department of Sociology. “Tension and Invention”.   
  • A lecture drawing from the book that David finished in the Fall during his fellowship year at CASBS.
• Tsinghua University, Department of Sociology. “The Performance Complex.”  
  • A lecture drawing from his book of the same name (Oxford University Press).
• Beihang University Law School.  “This is Not a Test!”  
  • A seminar on resilience and preparedness.
• The Goethe Institute, Beijing, and Beihang University Law School (with Italian social theorist Elena Esposito)
  • Panels celebrating the Chinese publication of Niklas Luhmann’s The Society of Society
